Deidei

About deidei

“deidei” is a brand offering handcrafted Mino ware tableware. The workshop is located in Mitake, Kani District, Gifu Prefecture — the heart of Japan's Mino region. The Mino region, known as the center of Japanese tableware production, has a long history of pottery-making spanning over 1,300 years. High-quality clay ideal for ceramics and abundant Japanese red pine forests that once fueled the kilns — these blessings of the land are the origin of deidei’s pottery.

Inherited Craftsmanship and Traditional Mino Ware Techniques

The artisans of deidei inherit traditional techniques through technical guidance from Mr. Toshiro Hori, who studied ceramic craftsmanship under a Living National Treasure (holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property) and has been honing his craft in Mino ceramics for more than 40 years. While Mino ware is celebrated for its diverse styles, deidei focuses on historically significant techniques such as Shino, Oribe, Kiseto, Haiyu (ash glaze), and Kohiki. The color and texture of these ceramics can vary greatly depending on the dynamic movement of flames during firing. Because mastering these subtle changes requires exceptional skill and sensitivity, each piece is produced carefully by hand in limited quantities.

Timeless Minimalism

deidei elevates the techniques and aesthetics cultivated through over 400 years of Mino-Momoyama ceramics history into simple designs that harmonize with modern European lifestyles. The minimalist forms are rustic yet sophisticated, bringing out the warmth of the clay and the beauty of the various glazes to their fullest. These pieces enrich the dining table and enhance the presentation of any cuisine.

One-of-a-Kind Character and Patina — the Joy of Growing

While every product by deidei is handmade, each piece is unique, never exactly alike in shape or color. The unique forms and subtle variations in the glaze convey the living “breath” of the artisan — something impossible to achieve through mass production. Made with porous clay, deidei’s tableware develops greater character over time through a process known as patina. Through daily use, the glaze matures, gradually deepening its colors and gaining a unique depth that only time can weave. In this way, each vessel becomes uniquely yours. This transformation process offers a true luxury, enriching your everyday life.

Please enjoy a mindfulness experience with deidei products, which are deeply rooted in the rich nature and history of the Mino region.
