Characteristics of the Product
Each piece is handcrafted by Japanese artisans, making every item unique.
You can appreciate the following features as the individual character of the product:
-
Individual Differences
Each piece may have slight variation in shape, size, and weight. These unique characteristics are proof of its “one-of-a-kind” nature of handcrafted artistry. -
Glaze
Every piece has a unique application of the glaze, its shading, and natural drip marks. These variations are proof of manual craftsmanship and reflect the beauty of Yohen (natural changes in the kiln). These are stylistic features and do not affect the quality or durability of the product. -
Kanyu (Crazing)
Fine, web-like patterns may appear on the surface of the ceramic. This is a characteristic unique to pottery, caused by the difference in shrinkage between the clay and the glaze during the firing process; it is not a crack or a defect in the body itself. As the piece is used over time, you can enjoy a beautiful patina of its color with these lines. -
Kairagi (Crackled Effect)
On Shino-glaced ware, a distinct crackled or beaded pattern known as Kairagi may appear. Similar to Kanyu (Crazing), this is a specific characteristic of Shino ware caused by the difference in shrinkage between the clay and the glaze during firing. It is not a structural crack or damage. With long-term use, you can enjoy the evolving beauty of its patina. -
Pinhole
Small, needle-like holes may occasionally be visible on the glazed surface. These are natural occurrences caused by the release of air from the clay or glaze during the production process and are a standard characteristic of handcrafted ceramics. -
Iron Spots
Small black spots may appear where iron particles inherent in the natural clay or glaze have reacted to the heat. This is a unique texture characteristic of natural materials and artisanal production.
