Shino - Tea Bowl
Description
This tea bowl has a commanding presence, making it the perfect centrepiece for a tea ceremony. Each piece is individually hand-shaped by a skilled artisan and carefully fired in a kiln. When held gently in both hands, you can appreciate the thick glaze unique to Shino ware, its warm texture, and the comfortable weight of fine ceramics.
One of the defining charms of Shino ware is the distinctive crackled or beaded pattern on the surface known as “Kairagi.” This textured appearance results from the difference in shrinkage between the clay and the glaze during firing. It is a unique characteristic of Shino pottery. The bowl’s simple, refined form further enhances the natural beauty and expressive qualities of the glaze.
Another pleasure of Shino ware lies in how it evolves over time. With regular use, the piece develops a richer character—a process often referred to as the graceful aging of "patina." As the time passes, the color deepens and the bowl acquires a more mature, nuanced expression.
While originally crafted for enjoying matcha, this versatile bowl is not limited in its use. It can also be used for serving a variety of culinary creations, from simmered foods and dishes with sauce to fresh fruit. Suitable for both Japanese and European cuisine, it is an excellent addition to everyday dining as well.
